Weekend Away in Cape May

Each year, Adam's family plans an annual "getaway" trip. Last year we ended up at Greenwood Lake, NY and this year it was scheduled for Cape May, NJ. The past few weeks have been CRAZY at work so unplugging for a bit was exactly what we needed.

Before moving to NYC, we never imagined how difficult it is to pack up for a week (ie. getting a cart and packing it up, picking up the rental car, unpacking the cart). Overtime time we have realized that anything you do here is more difficult than anywhere else. Just picture driving this overloaded cart through a busy street during morning rush hour... yeah we got some stares.

After getting settled, we decided we absolutely *needed* coffee in order to survive the 2.5 hour drive south to the beachfront. We stopped at a cute coffee shop on the border of Staten Island called Beans & Leaves. Per usual, Adam got hot coffee and I got an iced latte. After caffeinating, we headed over to the thrift shop next door and then got back on the road to finish our travels.

When we arrived we were greeted with one of the most beautiful sunsets we had seen in a long time! We live in lower Manhattan, and while we love so many aspects of our neighborhood, we almost never get the chance to see sunsets. So when we pulled in and saw this incredible view we just had to soak it up! We stayed on the bay with Adam's family, which was a first for us both. On vacation we tend to sleep in, so it's hard for us to get out of bed early enough each morning for a sunrise -- but after witnessing these sunsets we might be bay-side people from now on.

Our itinerary for the weekend included shopping, drinking, relaxing and enjoying time together. A few of the wineries and breweries we visited included:

Wineries

Breweries

Distillery

In addition to sipping our way through the Cape we explored the historic downtown. Notable restaurants, shops, and things to do included:

Restaurants

  • Mad Batter

  • Brown Room at Congress Hall

Shops and Sights

  • Congress Hall

  • Washington Street Mall

  • Galvanic Clothing Store

  • Victorious Boutique

  • Cape May Lighthouse

After a great weekend like this one it's hard to "get back to the grind" as my parents always say. We are already excited to see what town we will be exploring next year!
